HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The Glenelg Community Hospital Inc was opened as a maternity hospital on 1st November, 1950. The Hospital was established by the Apex Club of Glenelg who raised funds from the community with these funds being subsidised by the South Australian Government.

In 1955 the first operating theatre was built.

During the first twenty years more than 20,000 babies were born at the Hospital. In 1961 the East Wing of the Hospital was built. This included private rooms with share bathroom facilities.

In 1971 a new Midwifery wing was built followed by new labour suites (Alan Giles wing) in 1974.

In 1983 the present Theatres and Recovery Room were opened bringing the operating facilities into line with the best in the state.

In 1986 the Hospital established a Colonoscopy/Endoscopy Unit.

The Owen Bowering Memorial Day Surgery Suite was completed in 1997.

In recent years the Hospital has continued to upgrade all of its facilities including accommodation, staff and medical technology expertise.

The Hospital currently has 30 single room accommodation with ensuite facilities, 4 share rooms and a 4 bed special care unit.
